Personally don't see the problem with it, they've already said they can get them through means that don't harm anyone. So why not let them do tests to see if the stem cells can be used as a means of curing disease. What if they could be used to cure aids? Cancer? Down Syndrome? or even other serious ailments?
To me it sounds more like refusing allowing stem cell research is catering to the pharmaceutical and health industry so that the status quote of treating illnesses, rather than curing them stays in effect.

The expert Bill Hoffman's comment was :
"No country that has liberalized its policy has subsequently retreated to a more restrictive policy."
Sound familiar - trying to ban abortions intermittently for 37 years since Roe vs Wade in 1973?
Afraid it might be nothing more than whatever way the political wind is blowing. President Reagan was a perfect example - until he himself became ill with Alzheimers. Only then did Nancy Reagan become an outspoken advocate for it. Politics as usual me thinks.

One MAJOR optimistic thought: Since Bill Gates and Warren Buffett now have signed on over 40 billionaires pledging to leave atleast 1/2 of their estates to charities/philanthropy and the total is at present over $150 billion dollars............
just maybe some will earmark some of those funds SPECIFICALLY for STEM CELL RESEARCH!
(And don't forget research for Spinal /Brain Regeneration folks......) Thank you, especially for our young servicepeople.
